Difficulty Adjustment

The automatic retuning that keeps block times steady.

Roughly every two weeks Bitcoin adjusts how hard it is to find a block so that blocks keep arriving about every ten minutes regardless of how much hashrate joined or left. It is the mechanism that lets the network absorb a mining boom or a sudden shutdown without breaking.
