Cryptographer Nik Bougalis, who led the development of key XRP Ledger protocols for nearly a decade, has officially returned to work on the project’s source code.
One of the clearest indicators of the event’s significance for the industry was the endorsement of Ripple CTO Emeritus David Schwartz. Schwartz, who has stepped away from active development, briefly commented on his colleague’s return on X.
There are good reasons for such an emotional gesture from the blockchain’s co-creator. Schwartz previously said publicly that the only thing that could make him interrupt his own break and return to coding would be the chance to work alongside Bougalis again.
Bougalis marked his return in the code itself by opening pull request PR #8300 in the official XRPLF/rippled repository, under the tongue-in-cheek title “I’m back, baby.”
This is more than a symbolic return. It is a deep, low-level modernization of the network’s core. Bougalis’s proposed changes aim to significantly improve security and optimize the ledger’s performance:
Nik Bougalis is a Ripple veteran, the company’s eighth employee, and the author of key cryptographic patents for the platform. He left the project in 2022 and served as CTO of the Algorand Foundation in 2025. His return to XRPL coincides with sweeping structural changes across the industry.
H. Ayo Akinyele, head of engineering at RippleX, has already confirmed that Bougalis has been brought in to tackle ambitious next-generation technology challenges.
As real-world assets (RWA) are integrated into XRPL and the U.S. regulatory landscape continues to change, the return of a specialist of his caliber restores the ecosystem’s main advantage: a strong, proven engineering tradition.
